+1 is shared by the USA, Canada and several Caribbean countries such as Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Some Caribbean +1 numbers are charged like premium international calls.
Missed call from a number starting with +1 – what to do
- Do not call back an unknown international number. A call that rings once and hangs up (wangiri) is meant to make you call a number with very high charges.
- Ignore job offers and "easy money" messages from unknown international numbers, for example on WhatsApp.
- Never read out one-time passcodes, card details or online banking passwords over the phone. Your bank and the police will never ask you to move money to a "safe account".
- Forward scam texts to 7726 for free and report fraud to Report Fraud, which replaced Action Fraud (in Scotland, to Police Scotland on 101).
