The "five area codes you should never answer" warning is shared endlessly on social media, and it contains a grain of truth wrapped in a misleading list. The danger is real, but it isn't limited to five codes, and for UK phones the list is largely beside the point.
Where the list comes from
The warnings started in the United States. In North America, many Caribbean countries share the +1 country code with the US and Canada, so a number from Jamaica (876) or the Dominican Republic (809) looks like an ordinary American number. People call back thinking it's domestic and get charged international rates. Lists of "five codes" pick some of these and circulate without context.
What matters for UK phones
In the UK, a call from those places shows as +1 876 or +1 809, which is clearly international. The real risk is the same trick with any country: a missed call from abroad, often ringing only once, that tempts you to call back. Numbers used in these one-ring campaigns change constantly, which is exactly why a fixed list of five gives false reassurance.
A rule that works better than any list
- Don't call back unexpected international missed calls. If someone abroad really needs you, they'll message or call again.
- Check the country code first. Our dialling codes page lists common codes such as +1, +225 (Ivory Coast), +234 (Nigeria) and +870 (satellite numbers).
- Be wary of UK numbers that aren't what they seem. 070 numbers look like mobiles, and 09 numbers are premium rate.
- Answering costs nothing in the UK. The charge comes from calling back, not from receiving the call - roaming abroad is the exception, so check your tariff when travelling.
Should you avoid answering, or avoid calling back?
The popular advice says "never answer". Our take: for UK users, calling back is the expensive mistake, not answering. If you answer an international spam call, hang up and block it. If you missed one, leave it. Either way, look the number up on Who Rang to see whether others received the same call.
If calls that ring once keep arriving, read why you keep getting calls that only ring once, and for a sudden run of foreign numbers, see why you're suddenly getting calls from international numbers.
