A private number is not a special kind of phone number. It's a normal number that isn't being displayed on your screen. The question that matters is why it's hidden, and the answer ranges from your GP surgery's switchboard to a scam call centre.

That range is the reason there's no single right response. A private call on the morning you expect test results means something very different from a private call at 9pm on a Sunday, so the context of your day is often a better guide than the call itself.

Private, withheld, unknown: what your phone is saying

Your phone showsUsually means
Private number / WithheldThe caller or their phone system chose to hide the number
No caller IDThe number was hidden or not passed on
UnknownThe network couldn't provide a number, common with calls from abroad or some internet calls

Who calls from private numbers

  • Health services: GP surgeries and hospital departments often call from withheld numbers.
  • Police and public services: officers and social services frequently withhold numbers.
  • Banks and employers: some internal phone systems hide outgoing numbers.
  • Individuals: people who don't want to share their mobile number.
  • Spam and scammers: hiding a number avoids being reported and blocked.

Should you answer?

Our take: if you're waiting for a call from a hospital, surgery, school or employer, answer - they're a common source of private calls. Otherwise, letting it go to voicemail is reasonable. Genuine callers leave a message or try again. If you do answer, don't confirm personal details or security information to a caller you can't verify; ask for their name and department and call back on the organisation's official number.

If private calls keep coming

  1. Log the dates and times.
  2. Turn on filtering: Silence Unknown Callers on iPhone, blocking private or unknown numbers on Android, or Call Protect (1572) on a BT landline.
  3. If the calls are silent, abusive or clearly aimed at you, contact your provider's nuisance calls team and consider reporting to the police.
